Fall Outdoor Activities Around Town

Fall is right around the corner, which means colorful foliage and seasonal fun to see and do!  And the best part is all of Cornerstone communities are perfectly located near so many amenities that encourage a healthy lifestyle.   From scenic hiking in the mountains or along the James River, to wineries and historic sites, or a drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway.  This year is the time to get out and enjoy the cooler air and fall foliage in Virginia.

We compiled a short list of some of our favorite outdoor activities to discover this fall!   Between the Capitol city of Richmond all the way to the quaint and charming towns of Ashland and Fredericksburg.

Things to do around Richmond…

The James River

There is no other city where you can kayak and raft class III and IV rapids in an urban setting.  Richmond is the only place where you can run the rapids, pull out, and walk to a downtown brewery, restaurant or bar.  Belle Isle is a great place for a picnic, hike or a bit of rock-climbing, and wading in the River.  The extensive James River Park System features many trails for walking, running and biking.  A favorite and popular is the Buttermilk Trail!   Take advantage of this gem and the scenic areas around the James River  for your outdoor oasis for thrills and relaxation alike.

These Are the Best U.S. Cities for Adventurous Travelers ...

Biking & Walking Trails

With a wide variety of unique trails for all skill levels, including the 52-mile Virginia Capital Trail and parks within the city limits, Richmond is known for offering some of the best biking excursions out there! Head outside for an exhilarating ride through the crisp, fall air or enjoy a leisurely ride and enjoy the scenery. Your perfect trail awaits

Historic Sites

From the cobblestoned street of Church Hill to the Civil War cannons at Malvern Hill Battlefield, the historic sites to visit in Richmond are endless. Immerse yourself in four centuries of stories and explore the very spots where famous figures throughout American history made their mark. Perfect for an outing with your grandkids, these sites will provide a one-of-a-kind, hands-on “history lesson” that’s fun for all.

Things to do around Fredericksburg…

Walking Trails

When it comes to fall in Fredericksburg, there’s nothing as relaxing as a breezy walk or hike through foliage-filled parks and trails. Not to mention, with the beautiful and fresh, clean air, it’s the perfect exercise! This season, grab a few friends, lace up your shoes, and take in the beautiful surroundings at your favorite Fredericksburg spot.

Wineries/Breweries

Throughout central Virginia, you’ll find a variety of unique wineries and breweries that cater to all palates and preferences — so whether you’re more of a “relax with a glass” or “taste-test a beer flight” kind of person, you’re sure to find the perfect spot for a boozy fall afternoon.

Historic Sites

George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Walt Whitman… these are just a few of the many important figures who have had an impact on Fredericksburg. If you’re a history buff (or simply love to explore and learn something new), the historic sites in this charming, storied town, from Acquia Church to Chancellorsville Battlefield, will fill your day with wonder.

Now that you have more “free” time on your hands, (because someone else will take care of the yard work!) get out and enjoy the many places to explore not far from home.  Our homeowners love being able to “lock & leave” with no worries and enjoy the exciting opportunities to explore in the Greater Richmond, Ashland and Fredericksburg areas!!

From all of us at Cornerstone Homes, we hope you enjoy the beginning of fall!
