Practicing Gratitude

What is gratitude? There are many definitions of gratitude and for each of us it means something a little different.  But right now, for a lot of us, gratitude means realizing that we have more of what really matters than ever before, no matter how difficult this moment might be. Gratitude allows us to recognize good in our lives.

Gratitude also allows us to see that the sources of that good are usually close by. Practicing gratitude allows us to recognize  those who bring goodness into our lives and it also humbles us in order to give credit to those we are grateful for.

Practicing gratitude and being grateful are the keys to a happier life. For example, taking pause and being grateful for living in Virginia where the spring season is spectacular. Taking a few extra moments to look at all the native dogwoods, azaleas, forsythia, and daffodils.   Spring adds new life and new joy to all that is. It’s easy to be grateful for this beauty. Focusing and appreciating the good in our lives constantly reminds us of great things around us.

The Gratitude Diaries, by Janice Kaplan, is a book you may want to add to your reading list while sheltering in place.   In the book, she explores how gratitude can transform every aspect of a person’s life, with sections on marriage, love, and family; money, career, and the stuff we own; health; and coping, caring, and connecting. “It is not,” promises Kaplan, “done from a spiritual perspective. It’s written for people like me who are busy with life and, while we know we should appreciate it, often forget to. Hopefully, the book will show readers they can stop and take control of their lives, they don’t have to wait for something wonderful to happen.”

A few other ways to practice gratitude:

Keep a journal.  Every day, write down what you are grateful for that day.

Practice hope. Trust in the future and our power to endure and persist, to live fully.

Breathe. Breathe. Breathe some more. Take time in your day, at any moment, to take ten deep even breaths. Carve out 5-10 minutes to meditate or practice mindfulness. Wherever you are.

And of course, stay healthy through  sleep, diet, exercise. Seek healing and wellness holistically – mind, body, and spirit.

As Lady Bird Johnson said, "Where flowers bloom, so does hope."  This spring be grateful for everything and everyone you have.   At Cornerstone Homes, we are grateful for you, our homeowners, our staff, and everyone we work with.   We are here to keep your dreams alive!
