5 Reasons History Buffs LOVE Living in Fredericksburg!

Categories: Fredericksburg, VA, Local Articles, News & Events | Posted: April 11, 2017

If there’s a history lover in your midst, they’ll be in heaven living in a Cornerstone home near Fredericksburg. This region of Virginia is overflowing with history, from the Native American tribes through the early American Colonists to the Civil War era.

  1. Colonial Times. Colonial-era history comes alive as you wander through Fredericksburg. From walking tours of historic Old Town, to the James Monroe Museum and Library, and Hugh Mercer’s Apothecary Shop, you’ll find an endless array of restored historical sites to transport you back in time, where you can party like it’s 1775.

  1. Civil War Sites. Button up your shell jacket and don’t forget your musket when you visit these sites! In Fredericksburg, you’re never too far from a Civil War battlefield or historical site. Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County National Military Park encompasses four major battlefields of the Civil War – Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Courthouse. Other sites include the Trail to Freedom, Christ Episcopal Church, and the Confederate Cemetery.

  1. Historic Homes. If you find boxy, modern homes to be an eyesore, Fredericksburg has just the thing for you! To see one of the most beautiful historic homes in the country, you have to stop by Chatham. This home was built in the 18th century, served as a headquarters and hospital for the Union army during the Battle of Fredericksburg, and was a private residence until 1975! Most historic homes feature beautiful gardens, along with exhibits that tell the story of the time.  Visit George Washington’s Boyhood Home at Ferry Farm, where you can observe an active archeological lab! Or forget farmers and fossils, and visit the Historic Kenmore Plantation. George Washington’s sister and her husband built this beautiful, Georgian-style brick mansion.

  1. Native American History. Several Native American tribes occupied the area surrounding Fredericksburg. The Eagle Nest Trading Post in Spotsylvania offers a variety of services for those interested in Native American culture. Teaching and reaching across cultural boundaries is the main purpose of Eagles Nest Trading Post, including educational programs, community fairs and events, special presentations and handmade Native American arts, crafts, and clothing.

  1. The Grapes & Grain Trail. Enjoy Virginia’s “spirited” history! The trail wanders through many of the most beautiful and historic areas of Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania, and includes 5 wineries, 5 breweries, and a distillery. Experience farmhouse ales in a historic farm brewery, sip hand-crafted bourbon at a family-owned distillery, and slip away to a Tuscan winery only 45 minutes from DC.

After years of doing for others, you’ve reached an age where you want to do for yourself. At Cornerstone Homes, we can absolutely help you achieve that goal. Our communities are all about encouraging your freedom and pursuing an active lifestyle. Life here means no yard work, no maintenance issues, no snow shoveling. We’re also firm believers in the lock-and-leave lifestyle. For people who travel, or have second homes, or are simply are too busy to deal with the nuisances of homeownership, a low maintenance home that is secure and looked after while you’re off living your life is a dream come true.

Legions of active adults, retirees and Baby Boomers have learned to embrace the concept of worry-free spare time, indulging in leisure activities, traveling, volunteering, socializing or even taking on second careers. Join the crowd! Instead of fussing about annual upkeep, go on a cruise or visit the kids. Instead of mowing the lawn, go for a swim, take a yoga class, or pick up a new hobby. Enjoy your spare time… you’ve earned it!

Maintenance-free living is one of our principles at Cornerstone Homes. We build high quality, affordable single-story homes in secure, maintenance-free communities in Virginia and North Carolina. We want our homeowners to have lives full of choices and opportunities, for them to have the homes and lifestyles they envision and deserve, whether that means more free time to travel, or more freedom to enjoy family and friends.

Meet Ms. Ruby Barley – the woman who gave us Barley Woods!

Categories: Blog, Fredericksburg, VA, Local Articles, News & Events | Posted: December 21, 2016

Our newest community, Barley Woods, was built on the heartwarming story of Mrs. Ruby Barley, the original owner of the land. She and her husband raised their children here, built two homes here, and made many wonderful memories on this land.  Her children played in the woods, inventing games and picking berries, while she listened lovingly from her home.

After her husband died, Ms. Barley began to think about what she might want to do with her lot. Raising a home full of children was a breeze, but eighteen acres of land would be a lot for one woman to care for! Although many developers and agencies approached her about the land, Mrs. Barley only trusted one – Roger Glover and Cornerstone Homes. Roger knew of the cherished memories Mrs. Barley had here. He would only buscreen-shot-2016-12-21-at-2-17-36-pmy if she was absolutely certain that she was ready to sell.

A recent article in The Free Lance-Star featured Ms. Barley and her 10-year journey with Cornerstone. Mrs. Barley’s stories played an essential role in the community’s unique plan. Cornerstone will maintain much of the site’s rural character, emphasizing orchards and nature trails alongside resort-style features, like the clubhouse and pool.

Mrs. Barley is happy that the land she has called home for decades, will now be a place for so many active adults to make their own memories.

If you’d like to learn more about Ms. Ruby Barley and her relationship with Cornerstone, you can check out this video from the ribbon cutting.

A highly discussed and anticipated residential farming community that developers say would leverage Hanover County’s natural landscape won approval from the Board of Supervisors on Wednesday night. The board unanimously supported a request to rezone 180 acres for Chickahominy Falls, a 404-home development on Cedar Lane and Holly Hill Road in the Elmont area.

Extolled by developers as first-of-its-kind, innovative and compatible with Hanover’s agrarian traditions, the development would be hemmed to the south by the Chickahominy River and feature nature trails, gardens, orchard areas and 10 acres for communal farming. Plans include 73 acres of open space as well as a pool and clubhouse in the center of the development.
