Meet Ms. Ruby Barley – the woman who gave us Barley Woods!

Our newest community, Barley Woods, was built on the heartwarming story of Mrs. Ruby Barley, the original owner of the land. She and her husband raised their children here, built two homes here, and made many wonderful memories on this land.  Her children played in the woods, inventing games and picking berries, while she listened lovingly from her home.

After her husband died, Ms. Barley began to think about what she might want to do with her lot. Raising a home full of children was a breeze, but eighteen acres of land would be a lot for one woman to care for! Although many developers and agencies approached her about the land, Mrs. Barley only trusted one – Roger Glover and Cornerstone Homes. Roger knew of the cherished memories Mrs. Barley had here. He would only buscreen-shot-2016-12-21-at-2-17-36-pmy if she was absolutely certain that she was ready to sell.

A recent article in The Free Lance-Star featured Ms. Barley and her 10-year journey with Cornerstone. Mrs. Barley’s stories played an essential role in the community’s unique plan. Cornerstone will maintain much of the site’s rural character, emphasizing orchards and nature trails alongside resort-style features, like the clubhouse and pool.

Mrs. Barley is happy that the land she has called home for decades, will now be a place for so many active adults to make their own memories.

We are getting noticed! Cornerstone Homes was one of the subjects in a recent article in Richmond Biz Sense. The article, about local builders and the busy 55-plus markets, talked about Cornerstone’s new Barley Woods community in Fredericksburg, and mentioned the Villas at Magnolia Lakes, Villas at Ashlake and Chickahominy Falls, too.  Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to Celebrate Opening

 

On September 15th, Barley Woods, a Boutique 55+ Active Adult Community,  celebrated the opening of its Sales Office located at 5223 Plank Road in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Barley Woods, a small, intimate community of 124 maintenance-free villa homes will feature 7 single story home designs, a luxurious clubhouse with pool, fitness center, outdoor recreation areas  and pocket gardens;  Boxwell Glade, a preserved natural area with a creek side walking trail, exercise trail, dog park, and orchard and more.

Those in attendance included Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce Board of Director member Janel Donohue, Fredericksburg business owners, engineers and architects associated with the project, and Cornerstone Homes team members. Also in attendance was Ms. Ruby Barley, previous owner of a large portion of the property upon which Barley Woods will be built.  Roger Glover, Owner of Cornerstone Homes, and Ms. Ruby gave a brief background of their first meeting nearly 10 years ago about his vision for the property.   Ms. Ruby spoke of raising her 4 children on the 32 acres upon which Barley Woods is now growing up.   She called it their “home place” their place of beauty, comfort, and tranquility.   Ms. Ruby stated, “We all hope that, even though the face of the land has changed,  the people who choose to live here will know the same peace that we loved.”  Roger Glover stated, “we are building on the Barley Woods legacy, creating a community where quiet places and actives places are woven together.  A relaxing and peaceful place to come home to.”

Cornerstone Homes Expands Leadership Team

Aligns Company for Future Growth

Roger Glover, CEO of Cornerstone Homes, an exclusive builder of active adult communities, today announced the expansion of Cornerstone’s leadership team plus promotions for key team players.

Leading the announcements is the appointment of Frank Lackman as President of Cornerstone Homes.

Mr. Glover noted “Cornerstone and its customers will benefit from Frank’s 30+ years experience in residential building and development. We are looking to him for leadership and implementation to enable Cornerstone Homes’ achieving its long term vision and goals.”

Prior to joining Cornerstone, Mr. Lackman served as a Division President with a Fortune 500 national homebuilder in Maryland and Northern Virginia. His success in taking a strategic vision and executing large-scale initiatives is well suited to help Cornerstone Homes’ growth as a premier builder of active adult communities.    Frank is a graduate of the esteemed McIntire School of Commerce University of Virginia.

Also announced is the hiring of Tom Gancsos as Director of Sales for Cornerstone Homes.

Mr. Glover said, “Tom will be responsible for developing company-wide strategic sales objectives, plus leading Cornerstone’s high-performing sales force. We are looking forward to his leadership in market research, product identification and sales growth in all our existing and planned developments .”

Tom brings 35 years of experience in the new home industry in various positions in management, land acquisition and development, sales and marketing, construction and warranty. Recently, he served as Richmond Division President of Orleans Homes, a Top 5 National Builder.  He previously had been a Regional VP of Operations for Ryland Homes overseeing the homebuilding operations of  Ryland in 3 States.

Dotti Haines Houlihan is promoted to Cornerstone Homes’ Director of Marketing and Public Relations.

Mr. Glover noted: “For 9 years Dotti has helped Cornerstone establish its market recognition, good reputation, and rapport with our homebuyers. She will be leading Cornerstone Homes’ marketing, advertising, plus our community relations.”

Dotti’s additional responsibilities include enhancing the connectivity and happiness of homeowners through social events and activities at all Cornerstone Homes’ communities. Cornerstone is not just recognized for building unique, single-story homes but for creating dynamic active adult communities that emphasizes fun, active and healthy lifestyles for its residents.

Additionally, Caitlin Ivey has been promoted to Purchasing Agent.

Caitlin has been instrumental in the implementation of new software systems for Cornerstone. Caitlin is a recent graduate of VCU with a Bachelors Degree Majoring in Math Statistics and Operations Research and a Minor in Business.

Cornerstone Homes has recently welcomed back sales specialist Janet Davis. She will be selling the remaining homes in the final phase of The Villas of Wake Forest, in Wake Forest.

Janet previously sold for Cornerstone Homes at The Orchard Villas in Apex, which was completed in Spring of 2015.  She has over 30 years of experience selling new homes in the active adult market.

Richmond Times Dispatch: Hanover Supervisors Approve Residential Farming Community

A highly discussed and anticipated residential farming community that developers say would leverage Hanover County’s natural landscape won approval from the Board of Supervisors on Wednesday night. The board unanimously supported a request to rezone 180 acres for Chickahominy Falls, a 404-home development on Cedar Lane and Holly Hill Road in the Elmont area.

Extolled by developers as first-of-its-kind, innovative and compatible with Hanover’s agrarian traditions, the development would be hemmed to the south by the Chickahominy River and feature nature trails, gardens, orchard areas and 10 acres for communal farming. Plans include 73 acres of open space as well as a pool and clubhouse in the center of the development.

Richmond BizSense: Hanover OK’s 400-home, Farm-centric Development

AChickahominy-Falls-Master-Planrevised-ftd residential concept that blends organic farming with suburban living will become a reality in Hanover County. County supervisors have approved Cornerstone Homes’ proposal for Chickahominy Falls, a 400-home development on about 150 acres along Holly Hill Road just south of Cedar Lane.

The unanimous vote introduces the concept locally of a residential development with a community farming component. Cornerstone Homes’ Roger Glover has said the project would be the first of its kind in the metro Richmond area. The approved project increases the number of age-restricted residential units from 200 to 300. Those homes would be targeted to the 55-and-up homebuyer demographic, while the remainder would be marketed to Millennials who like the idea of community-based farming.

The community will be anchored by a staffed, working farm that residents could support – a concept called “community-supported agriculture.” Glover is working with Matthew “Quint” Redmond of Colorado-based Agriburbia, which integrates farming into new and existing developments.

The top eight local firms in Richmond BizSense’s annual list of the highest-producing homebuilders retained their same spots from the previous year, while

Cornerstone Homes came in at No. 12, in its first appearance in the annual rankings. Owner Roger Glover, who focuses on communities for residents 55 and up, sold his first homes locally in 2015 after building in other markets over the past few decades.

“We made a decision to focus on Richmond, and up to Fredericksburg and Hampton Roads, starting two years ago,” Glover said. “We weren’t building at all in Richmond until 2014.” That was when Cornerstone purchased Magnolia Lakes, its first local property, out of foreclosure. Glover said he had kept a distance from Richmond previously because Magnolia Lakes’ original developer, Tascon Group, had the rights to the metro Richmond market for Epcon Communities, a national homebuilder that Cornerstone works with on its projects.
